John W. Hill and Amanda Hill’s oldest Daughter, Freddie Mae Hill, Sr., became the first African-American to graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Home Economics’ Department. Freddie Mae Hill went on to graduate school to receive her Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin. Correspondence between Freddie Mae Hill and the freedom fighter Frederick Douglas were found in the Library of Congress.   For decades, Freddie Mae Hill taught Home Economics in the Kansas City, Kansas School System, going home to Madison, Wisconsin to spend weekends with her parents, John and Amanda Hill.  Today, a mural stands on a wall in Madison’s East Side, honoring Freddie Mae Hill and other Madison, Wisconsin luminaries.
