In 1931, Edwin J. W. Hill, Sr. became the first “colored” Scoutmaster, when he organized the first colored Boy Scout Troop in Madison, Wisconsin, with the cooperation of the American Legion and the Troop sponsors. In 1932, Edwin J. W. Hill, Sr. was one of the three Founders of The Lincoln Athletic Club, the first colored club for young men, sponsored by the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, with the cooperation of the Board of Education, Department of Recreation. Until 1957, John W. Hill rented out the house at 114 N. Blount Street, after the death of Ida Carmichael in 1947. In 1957, John and Amanda Hill’s son, Edwin J.W. Hill, Sr., and his wife,

 
As a young girl, Charlyne Daniel and her sister Bernadine Daniel moved with their mother from Hope, Arkansas, to Madison, Wisconsin.  Charlyne, too, attended the University of Wisconsin.  Charlyne Daniel Hill made her mark working as a counselor with children at various institutions in Madison, and other cities in Wisconsin, such as the Oregon School for Girls.  Charlyne Daniel Hill dedicated her free time to, and was a strong leader in, the Eastern Stars of Madison and Milwaukee Wisconsin.
